Trade deficit narrows
The export growth has decelerated in February compared to January this year, registering a fall of 4.49 per cent in dollar terms. However, if compared over a 10-month period (April to February) in 1993-94 over the same period in 1992-93, exports have registered a growth of 20.59 per cent. According to the foreign trade data released by the Commerce Ministry, the exports were $2,026.4 millions in February as against $2,117.44 millions in January. Similarly, India’s exports were $19,825.19 millions during April-February, 1993-94, as against $16,440.75 millions during April- February 1992-93.
Indo-German agreement on investments soon
India and Germany hope to conclude a bilateral investment protection treaty in the near future. This emerged from a meeting that the German Federal Minister for Economics, Dr. Gunter Rexrodt had with the Finance Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, here today. The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the progress made in reaching satisfactory arrangements for the bilateral investment treaty as well as the double taxation agreement.
DGTD abolished
Keeping with its decision arrived at in 1991 in view of the changed economic environment, the Centre has finally-abolished the Directorate General of Technical Development (DGTD) as a separate organisation with effect from March 31,1994. According to a press note issued by the Ministry of Industry here on Wednesday, while the regional offices of DGTD were closed and redundant posts abolished with effect from October 1 last year, the technical directorates have now also been transferred to user ministries and departments.
