Opposition from the local public to Divi's Labs proposed pharma unit near Ontimamidi village in Thondangi mandal of East Godavari district is mounting and there was tension at the project site on Sunday and Monday due to the agitation.

Divi's Labs has taken up the project near Ontimamidi village for manufacture of intermediates and APIs at a cost of more than Rs 600 crore in 505 acres of land. The land (260 acres) was purchased from the locals but many farmers refused to give up their lands and the land acquisition issue is unresolved.

The public hearing for the project was conducted in June at Thondangi village amid tight security and there were protests from the local public even then.

On Sunday, Tuni MLA D. Ramalingeswara Rao alias Raja extended his support to the local public and he went to the project site along with some local people. The locals allegedly disrupted the work and pulled down some huts at the site.

On Monday also there was tension in the area as the police took into custody two persons in connection with Sunday's incidents. A crowd gathered at the site and the police dispersed them. Tuni MLA Raja appealed to the local people not to resort to any violence and carry on the struggle peacefully and take the issue to the notice of the Government.
