Dell EMC is ramping up its India R&D headcount by 15-20 per cent by the end of December 2017 and is looking for capabilities across the entire spectrum of engineers - from software engineers right up to the highest level of principal engineers; a top executive told BusinessLine .

Systems software, enterprise solutions, systems management software and cloud management software are the areas of expertise the company is looking to hire.

“We are hiring and are looking for talented people to work in our Bangalore Design Centre. Over the last five years, we have grown the India R&D headcount by 15-20 per cent annually. We expect to hire the same numbers by the year end” said Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, President Server Solutions, Dell EMC.

At the last count, before it merged with EMC in September 2016, Dell’s India R&D headcount stood at 2,500 engineers. Today, Dell EMC employs 25,000 people in India, however, it does not disclose headcount of its individual divisions. India has the largest footprint of employees outside of the US.

Server launch

Asked when the company is launching the new 14th generation PowerEdge Servers and the India R&D team’s contribution towards it, Gorakhpurwalla said “The plan is to launch the 14th generation PowerEdge Servers this year, however, I can’t reveal the exact date.”

On the India team’s contribution, he said “We are inventing and leading here, not copying or following. Interestingly, while our customers love our servers, many of them haven’t actually seen a server, as they manage the servers with a very sophisticated suite of server management tools like OpenManage and iDRAC that are developed right here, which allow customers to remotely manage them.

“This systems management capability in India is what makes it a very important team for the company.”

Rudramuni B, Vice-President & Centre Head (Dell EMC Bangalore Design Centre), Dell India R&D, said: “The design and implementation of the new version of Redfish, an open standards systems management interface for the 14th generation PowerEdge Servers as well as, the Redfish certification compliance kit is being driven by the Bengaluru team. Redfish enables efficient cloud infrastructure management for our customers.”

Commenting on the innovation culture in the Bangalore Design Centre, Gorakhpurwalla said: “I have witnessed an entire room full of innovations that is not even brought to market yet, and in some cases the team is showing me first-time innovations that we don’t even have a plan for yet. Our customers tell us we are at least one generation ahead of our peers with our systems management tools. We are building and setting standards for that.”

Last month, Doug Hillary, Senior Vice-President, Global Business Operations at Dell EMC, who was visiting India, told BusinessLine the company was looking to double the headcount of data scientists at its Performance Analytics Group, headquartered out of Bengaluru, over the next 12 months.

The company is looking to hire PhDs in Math and Statistics, agnostic to domain, with 3-4 years of experience at the entry level and 7-10 years of experience at the senior level.
