In a letter to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, differently abled people have sought higher income tax exemption in this year’s Union Budget, especially with rising inflation.
“Income tax exemption under Section 80U for people with disabilities (with disability up to 80 per cent), has been stagnant at Rs 50,000 for many years. Similarly, for people with severe disability (with disability more than 80 per cent) it is Rs 1,00,000,” said the letter by Javed Abidi, Honorary Direcrtor, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP).
It suggested that for disability of 40- 80 per cent, exemption may be increased to Rs 1,00,000 and for those with disability above 80 per cent, the exemption may be increased to Rs 1,50,000.
Such a move will greatly benefit the disabled population of the country as the cost of living for persons with disabilities is additionally high because of the assistive devices they require, said Abidi.
